GBR/CAA Training Day

Sunday 5th March 2006.

An excellent day was had by all, Bill Michie's brief overview was posted on our forums.

It was a good day in spite of the "brass monkey" weather. Here's a quick summary for the record:
Weather was very cold but clear. Max temp approx 4deg, with a 10-15mph wind from the Northwest all day. 16 pilots and 2 judges attended, of which, 13 actually flew, 2 observed/ listened and I got to run the show, with help from Alan Wild and others. Breakdown was as follows (flying pilots): 5 FAI, 2 Masters, 2 Seniors, 3 Standard and one Sportsman. Mostly GBR members with a few new/ potential members. Several Stansted MFC club members also visited and observed/ helped.

All pilots had two flights ( as planned), with a few additional flights for test-flying. Flying started at 10h30 after a Pilots' Briefing, and finished at approx 17h00. Worthy of mention was two "maiden" flights, namely James's Twister and Roger Marples's OTOP Extreme, both of which appeared to fly very well.

There was one "moment" when Alan's wing folded during the "1&1/2snap", don't know whether it was from excess speed/ power or from "aged airframe syndrome" ( Alan's aircraft do a LOT of flying!). Also a couple of pilots actually managed to fly over the pits, attempting to wake the rest of us up.............zero's generously awarded all round!
Most pilots flew their preferred schedules, though several elected to fly basic lines and turnrounds under the judges' watchful eyes, to improve their basic orientation/ presentation.

A BIG thanks to all for their help & support. I'd like to specifically mention:
My Club for the use of their field; Bob and Peter for their Judging expertise and assistance; Alan and George for their help & loan of equipment; and of course, all fliers who supported the event. I believe (Hope!) that everyone took some valuable lessons & experience away with them to help prepare for the new season.

Regards to all.
Bill Michie.
