When we set up the flight line at around 6pm on Friday evening it was hard to believe that the weather forecast could be even close to being right. Saturday morning hinted at what was to come. A stiff breeze from the left blowing in at around 45 degrees. The pilots briefing got off on time and we started flying at around 9am as planned. All pilots were kept busy with judging and scribing as Matt managed to keep the ball rolling with continuous flying untill we had a drop of rain just after lunch which delayed things a bit, but we managed to finish Saturday with almost our planned three rounds flown. As the wind increased through the day there was a distinct lack of aircraft flying on the airfield but our competitors rose to the occasion and shrugged off the thought that the wind was blowing that badly. Sunday saw the wind a little stronger from the start and it increased in speed and turned to blow at 90 degrees to the runway and blowing full in our faces during the morning. The maximum steady wind was measured at our flight line was 24 mph but the official comment from Control was they had seen a gusts of 42 mph, which I am sure hit me just as I flew through the bottom of my 'M' which ‘slightly’ put me off course. Flying was exceptional with everyone rising to the challenge and putting on a super show for our visitors who by lunch time had gathered in large numbers as we were the only discipline flying on the whole airfield. I handed out almost 150 leaflets and talked to several more and can report that the interest in what we do was appreciated far more by the public by keeping them informed by Stuart and Steve on the public address. When the three pilots flew the second F11 there was a spontaneous applause which was started by our visitors and joined by other members. So many of our visited were surprised and appreciative that we had provided chairs for them to rest, watch and listen. By Monday the wind had settled a little but it allowed us to complete our program and fly around 130 schedules over the weekend which was a super achievement by all pilots although we did finish a little early due to some electing not to fly in the last round. Our visitors were a little disappointed at that stage although a couple of demonstration flights were flown. Ashley
