prop for OS 140
« on: 19, May 2017, 06:30:21 AM »
I am just getting  back to flying with a old set pattern ship with a 16 x 14 APC prop - these appear to be in short supply in the UK or expensive to ship from out side could anyone advise on a suitable replacement [ or a uk stockist ]

Give PROPGUY a look. His website lists all sorts of props including the Falcon carbon ones.

16x14 on a 2-stroke will give lots of speed but make speed control much harder, even for landing. 2-blade 17x11 or 12, 16x12 or maybe even a narrow-blade 18x10 or 11 would be much better.
I recently acquired a couple of used 15.5x12 4-bladers which work very well on a Webra 1.60 but don't know how well they'd do on the OS 1.40.

Hope this helps, and Good luck!

Bill

The following props are the best for the OS 140 (based on my 15 years competition experience with the motor)

16x14 APC - excellent all round prop, soft sound, flexible and damped throttling.
17x12 APC Narrow - not the normal width blade. Crisper throttling, slower top speed. Preferred this prop, but not much in it.
Both props Ok on 10% nitro

OR 15x12 4 blader. Probably the best prop, but requires 20% nitro. Massive blade drag for better speed control. Superb braking in the downlegs. Top end power probably not as great as the 2 bladers, but much better overall control.

A few more tips: do not use anything less than 10% nitro - 20 % is much, much better. Throttling, top end & mid range & reliability a lot better with more nitro.
Never use any plug other than an OS F. Expensive, but you won't want more than 1 per season.
If you can, use a long tapered needle. Some engines have the shorter needle. The long is easier to tune. The mid range adjustment will just be on the lean side for best mid range.
Set the pipe on the long side - get any extra power required from nitro, not the pipe.
After starting -thoroughly warm up the engine for 30 secs. The engine needs to be slightly on the rich side. Do NOT peak it in on the ground - richen slightly. In the air - the engine will 'come on' quickly & maintain the setting.

Good luck.

Hi Jeff,

I just saw this post, 1-2 mount ago I was in Motors & Rotors and I bought a 18x11 Engel Super Silence Prop for my YS engine.

They also have one Engel Super Silence Prop 16 x 14 which is one of the best for F3A, see below link:

Kind regards,

Javad,
