CD: Ashley Hoyland. FAI Judges: Peter Cappleman, Alan Simmonds. Judges: Stuart Mellor, Dave Matthias. Score recorder and CD's Mentor: Matt Hoyland. Thank you to Margaret Cappleman for scribing most of the day. Podium. FAI: 1st Matt Hoyland, 2nd Dave Matthias, 3rd Peter Scoles. Masters: 1st Clive Grisold, 2nd Gary Armstrong, 3rd Alan Simmonds. Advanced: Adrian Mansell, 2nd Mike Watts. Intermediate: Adam Lomax, 2nd Steve Hunt, 3rd Richard Smith. Clubman: Josh Haghani. We were all ready to go after the pilots briefing at 8:40 but the low cloud threw doubts on proceedings. Agonisingly it was just about good enough for Clubman and Intermediate but a couple of hundred feet too low for FAI which Bill and Dave demonstrated with low cloud drifting under the models in the higher manoeuvres. Several flights were made to test the weather but we did manage to get some schedules completed before 2:00 when the cloud lifted and the sun showed its face for a few minutes and enough to clear the cloud until around 6:30 when the rain started, but we were almost cleared up and ready for home by this time. We had achieved 2 rounds for FAI and Masters and 3 rounds for everyone else. The decision for which schedules would be flown in the third round was picked out of the hat by Victor Hughani. I think the friendliest rivalry was in Intermediate where our two youngest pilots are making a name for themselves with Steve in his first year of competition determined to make his presence felt. May photographs show the spirit of competition in the Association with friendly chat in between rounds, but all eager to win when the flying starts. Congratulations to all pilots who disappeared into the cloud and didn't panic, and especially to Josh who was flying in his first competition after passing his 'B' in may. In the end I hope all competition flights were flown in reasonable conditions, even if Bill and Dave did get a practice flight each. Good to see support from Hubert, Mel and Gavin (and new arrival) even though they were not flying. Podium Photographs: Alan Lomax.
