The weather forecast was good and indeed the day started off sunny with a gentle breeze All pilots were ready well before the planned briefing time and were all set for the first round by 09:15 Although the initial entry was 19 this had dropped to 11 so a relaxed day’s competition was promised and so it turned out The general change from I.C. to electric was very obvious since the last comp @ Mansfield, clean and reliable yes but the sound of a YS is music to many A first time competition for Craig Nicholas with a Wot 4 and helped by Matt thoroughly enjoyed himself although admitting to being nervous, who hasn’t been there? Round 1 took a little (!) longer due to Gary Armstrong’s YS170CDI refusing to throttle back for tick over (read landing) the problem was traced to a cracked air box and so Gary decided to scratch During all this fun the BBQ sprang into life and the pilots/visitors and club members were fed and watered A surprise entrant (to others pilots anyway) was Tom Bootyman flying my Tojeiro/YS160 in Masters which was his first comp in3+ years and only his 10th flight with this model setup although I’m reliably informed this was a one off appearance A short break just after 2 was for a brief but impressive display by a full size Extra 206 flown by Steve Carver unfortunately cut short by a faulty fuel gauge (he was nearly empty!) I’d like to thank the Mansfield club for the use of the field, the 4 judges, Tom for help with the scoring, Valerie and Marie for the BBQ and the many others who helped make the day a success This, added to the fact that the 2 club members who entered both won their classes made it a little harder for me to announce I was standing down as CD for Mansfield. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the trials and tribulations of the “job” but due to my health issues I felt it was time to relinquish the work to someone else. Trevor Plumbe CD Photographs: Phil Dyke.
